Another high-value vehicle recovery has taken place in the Northern Cape, with police in Upington arresting a 27-year-old suspect for possession of a stolen vehicle valued at approximately R1,5 million.

The vehicle, a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, had been reported stolen in Woodstock, Cape Town, where a case of theft of a motor vehicle was opened. Approximately 12 hours later, on Thursday 23 July at about 07:30, police members in Upington intercepted the vehicle in the Upington Central Business District and arrested the driver.

The successful recovery was the result of members of the Upington K9 Unit and Border Policing following up on information from a vehicle tracking company, which led them to the exact location of the vehicle.

On 9 July, a stolen Toyota Hi-Lux GD-6 Double Cab bakkie with an estimated value of R1.4 million was confiscated in the early hours of the morning at the Vioolsdrift Border Post in the Northern Cape, and the 48-year-old driver was arrested. The vehicle was allegedly en route from South Africa to Namibia.

The District Commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District, Major General Monica Sebili, commended the successful recovery of the stolen vehicle in the latest incident, as well as the arrest of the suspect.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Upington Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, said Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe, police spokesperson.
