CITRUSDAL — West Coast College has broken its silence on the death of 19-year-old student Asemahle “Lilitha” Hanisi, whose body was found in an open field next to the Olifants River in Citrusdal on Women’s Day, Sunday 9 August, a week after she was reported missing.

In a media statement shared on Wednesday 12 August, Ivan Swart, spokesperson for West Coast College, said the institution was deeply saddened by the passing of Lilitha Hanisi, a student at the College’s Citrusdal Campus.

“We extend our sincere condolences to Lilitha’s family, friends, fellow students and all those who knew her during this difficult time. We also acknowledge the impact that this loss may have on the Citrusdal Campus community,” Swart said.

He confirmed that the College had been notified of the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. “The College has been notified of the student’s death and the circumstances surrounding the matter. However, as the matter remains under investigation, the College is not at liberty to investigate or comment on any allegations at this stage,” he said.

Swart added that the College would cooperate fully with the authorities. “The College will provide its fullest support, within its mandate, to the relevant authorities as they continue with their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. We also thank the South African Police Service for its ongoing support and work in this matter.”

Lungisa Mbulawa, West Coast College Principal, echoed the College’s commitment to supporting students and staff during this difficult period.

Swart said the College remains committed to supporting its students and staff during this difficult time and extends its thoughts and condolences to all those affected by Lilitha’s passing.

Hanisi was reported missing at the Citrusdal Police Station on Monday 3 August. According to her family, she had attended an event before she and her friends allegedly planned to go to a tavern. The family said she was later seen with an older man whom her friends reportedly did not know. They allegedly tried to take her with them, but the man reportedly refused and assaulted her friends before they eventually left.

Citrusdal police have opened a murder case for investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage.
