Youth explore their future

PIKETBERG – More than 400 learners gathered at Steynville Primary School in Piketberg on Friday 24 July for Bergrivier Municipality’s 10th consecutive Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Development Expo (LoTYDE).

Mayor Ray van Rooy said creating opportunities for young people remains a key priority, as the youth are the future of Bergrivier.

The expo connects learners with tertiary institutions, prospective employers and financial institutions, providing information on study opportunities, bursaries and admission requirements.

High school learners from Piketberg, Porterville, Steynville Secondary and Velddrif attended the event.

Institutions including the Gene Louw Traffic College, University Stellenbosch and the University of Cape Town showcased courses and bursary opportunities, while NSFAS provided information on financial assistance. Nedbank and Standard Bank also shared information about student banking and loan options.

Established in 2015 through the mayor’s office with support from the Department of Education, LoTYDE has grown annually.

Learners were entertained by MC

Ashley Pienaar and performer LudaG, while each received a branded goodie bag. Prizes included speakers, headphones, tablets and a laptop. The municipality thanked participating institutions, schools, educators and stakeholders for contributing to the milestone event.
