The Melkbosstrand High School Interact Club, proudly affiliated with the Rotary Club of Melkbos, has been hard at work this year, showing how young people from Atlantis, Melkbosstrand, Table View and Blouberg can make a real difference in their communities.
One of their most touching projects was a visit to the Seapark Retirement Home, also known as the “Lilac Residence”, in Melkbosstrand. The Interactors spent a joyful afternoon with the elderly residents, sharing stories, laughter and even a fun quiz. The smiles op both sides proved that small acts of kindness can have a big impact.
The club also stepped up when disaster struck in Dunoon over Christmas. Fires had left many families devastated, and the Interactors quickly organised a donation drive. Essential household items were collected and delivered to learners at Inkwenkwezi High School, bringing relief and hope to those affected.
Closer to home, the Interactors visited the Dutch Reformed church Sonnekus, where they joined children from Woodbridge Primary at a free after-care centre. Through games and encouragement they created a safe and uplifting space for the youngsters, a reminder that community support starts with simple acts of care.
Weekly meetings have also been a chance for growth and learning. Members explored topics such as recycling and environmental responsibility, and tackled the issue of bullying, discussing ways to build a culture of kindness and respect at school. Adding to their busy schedule, six Interactors attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp in Franschhoek. Returning leaders Letso Mokoena and Miané de Klerk guided newcomers Amber Huisman, Neale Smit, Arielle Pienaar and Lihan Dippenaar.
