Helderberg RFC produced a commanding display on home soil on Saturday afternoon 27 June, running in eight unanswered tries to defeat Franschhoek RFC 48-0 in their Western Province Super League A encounter at Charles Morkel Stadium.
The home side wasted little time in stamping their authority on the contest. After sustained early pressure, Jayden Daniels crossed the whitewash in the 11th minute for Helderberg’s opening try. Michael Visser added the conversion to give the hosts a deserved 7-0 lead.
Helderberg continued to dominate possession and territory, and their efforts were rewarded again in the 33rd minute when Visser dotted down for the team’s second try.
Although the conversion was unsuccessful, Helderberg went into the halftime break comfortably ahead at 12-0.
The second half belonged entirely to the Berg men as they turned their territorial dominance into a flood of points.
Just eight minutes after the restart, JJ Stover powered over for Helderberg’s third try in the 53rd minute, with Visser once again adding the extra two points.
Only five minutes later, Mauritz Swart extended the lead with another well-worked try before Hughwan Engelbrecht joined the score sheet in the 65th minute as Helderberg’s attacking momentum proved too much for the visitors.
The tries kept coming as Junior Fortuin crossed in the 67th minute, with Visser maintaining his accuracy from the kicking tee to stretch the advantage even further. With the match already secured, Helderberg finished in emphatic fashion.
Luke Carew scored in the 78th minute before Dian Koen capped off a memorable afternoon with the final try just a minute later. Darren Hendricks added the conversion to round off an outstanding team performance.
Helderberg’s disciplined defence was equally impressive, denying Franschhoek any scoring opportunities throughout the 80 minutes to secure a comprehensive 48-0 victory.
The convincing win highlights Helderberg’s growing confidence and cohesion as they continue their Western Province Super League A campaign, delighting the home supporters with an entertaining display of attacking rugby and resolute defence.
Helderberg RFC will be back on home soil this Saturday, 4 July, when they host Van Der Stel Evergreens RFC in another crucial Western Province Super League A encounter at Charles Morkel Stadium.
