Strand police have issued a stern warning to residents ahead of a nationwide anti-immigrant march planned for Tuesday 30 June.
Lt-Col Noxolo Patience Rulwa, visible policing commander of Strand Police Station, said police been made aware of reports of threats and unrest.
“Any person found participating in violence, looting, vandalism, intimidation or carrying dangerous weapons will be reported to Strand police and face criminal charges.”
Rulwa said police would not tolerate the targeting of foreign nationals, the looting of shops or homes, vandalism of property or infrastructure, intimidation or threats toward any person or business, or dangerous weapons being carried in public.
All residents, regardless of nationality, have a right to safety and dignity under South African law, she added.
Rulwa has urged the community to remain calm and discourage any illegal activity.
“Let us protect Strand, protect each other and uphold the law.”
Residents were asked to report threats or planned unrest to Strand police on 021 854 3264 or 071 675 2908 and, in emergencies, call 10111.
