Helderberg RFC produced an entertaining and convincing performance under the Wednesday-night lights at Charles Morkel Stadium on 29 July, securing an impressive 48-21 victory over Stellenbosch Maties in a high-energy Super League A clash.

Playing in front of their home supporters, the Berge started with purpose and wasted little time putting Maties under pressure. Just four minutes into the match, Darren Hendricks crossed the line for the opening try, with Michael Visser adding the conversion to give Helderberg an early 7-0 lead.

The home side continued to dominate possession and territory. Nine minutes later Erhard Lambrecht scored Helderberg’s second try, before Jayden Daniels added another 13 minutes later as the Berge continued to find gaps in the Maties defence.

Helderberg extended their advantage in the 20th minute when Dian Koen crossed for another five-pointer. Visser calmly added the conversion, putting the home side firmly in control.

The Berge were not finished. Hughwan Engelbrecht added Helderberg’s fifth try in the 25th minute, as the home side’s attacking momentum continued to build. Maties eventually found their response in the 34th minute, with Mckyle Volmoer scoring their first try of the evening.

Charles Vosloo converted to give the visitors a much-needed boost. Helderberg nevertheless went into the break comfortably ahead at 29-7.

The second half began with Helderberg continuing to apply pressure. In the 49th minute, the Berge were awarded a penalty, which Visser confidently converted. Another penalty followed nine minutes later, and he again made no mistake from the kicking tee to stretch Helderberg’s advantage.

Maties refused to surrender and mounted a strong fightback.

In the 60th minute, CJ Erasmus scored their second try, with Vosloo converting. Eight minutes later, Zuko Poswa crossed for Maties’ third try, and once again Vosloo added the extras.

The visitors’ second-half revival was halted when Helderberg earned another penalty in the 73rd minute, with Visser completing his third successful penalty of the night.

The Berge then finished the match strongly. Ricardo Links crossed for Helderberg in the 77th minute, before Junior Fortuin put the finishing touches on an outstanding home performance with the final try of the evening in the 79th minute.

When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read Helderberg RFC 48-21 Stellenbosch Maties.

It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Berge, who combined clinical attacking rugby with an impressive kicking display from Visser. Despite Maties’ spirited second-half response, Helderberg’s early dominance had laid the foundation for a convincing win.
