Helderberg Rugby Club produced another impressive Super League A performance on Saturday 18 July, overcoming a blistering start by Kuils River Rugby Club to secure a convincing 50-27 victory at the Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand.

The visitors stunned the home crowd almost immediately, when Liam Parker crossed the whitewash just 20 seconds after kick-off. Earl Rose added the conversion to give Kuils River a dream start (0-7).

Only three minutes later, Rose extended the visitors’ advantage when he crossed the whitewash and converted, leaving Helderberg trailing 0-14 after only four minutes.

The home side responded in typical fashion. In the sixth minute, powerful forward Erhard Lambrecht crashed over for Berge’s opening try, with Michael Visser adding the extras to reduce the deficit (7-14).

Kuile stretched the lead in the ninth minute when Rose calmly slotted a penalty goal (7-17).

From there, the home team gradually took control of the contest. Jayden Daniels crossed in the 21st minute to reignite Berge’s challenge before Hughwan Engelbrecht powered over in the 32nd minute. Visser’s successful conversion edged Helderberg into the lead (19-17).

Just before the half-time whistle, Daniels grabbed his second try of the afternoon, capping off an excellent comeback as Helderberg went into the break with a 24-17 lead.

The second half belonged almost entirely to the home side.

Only a minute after the restart, Visser showcased his all-round brilliance by scoring a try and converting it himself (31-17). He repeated the feat in the 54th minute, extending Helderberg’s lead with another converted try (38-17).

Two minutes later, Mauritz Swart added Berge’s seventh try, putting the result beyond doubt (43-17).

Kuile refused to give up and were rewarded with late tries by Lyle Hendricks in the 67th minute and Adri Jacobs in the 71st minute, but the visitors were unable to mount a comeback (43-27).

Appropriately, Visser had the final say; in the 78th minute he crossed for Helderberg’s eighth try before converting it himself to complete an outstanding individual performance and seal the deserved 50-27 victory.

Helderberg’s resilience after conceding two early tries demonstrated the character that has become a hallmark of the local club this season. The hosts remained composed, gradually built pressure, and ultimately outscored Kuils River eight tries to four in front of their home supporters.

With no fixture this coming weekend, Berge will enjoy a well-earned break before turning their attention to their final home league match of the season.

They will host Stellenbosch Maties under the lights at Charles Morkel Stadium on Wednesday 29 July, in what promises to be another exciting Super League A encounter.

The victory keeps Helderberg’s momentum firmly intact as they head into the closing stages of the league campaign, with confidence high after another entertaining display in front of the Berge faithful.
