Helderberg Rugby Club delivered a statement performance on Saturday 30 May, overcoming one of Western Province Rugby Union’s traditional powerhouse clubs, Hamiltons, 45-34 in an entertaining Super League A clash at the Charles Morkel Stadium.

The home side showed resilience, clinical finishing, and composure under pressure to claim a well-deserved victory against one of the union’s most formidable opponents.

Hamiltons struck first in the eighth minute when scrumhalf Kristoff Smith crossed the whitewash for the opening try, with Ethan Isaacs adding the conversion to give the visitors an early 7-0 lead. Helderberg responded 16 minutes later when flyhalf Michael Visser slotted a penalty goal to open the home side’s account.

The momentum shifted further in Helderberg’s favour in the 21st minute when Mauritz Swart powered over for the hosts’ first try of the afternoon.

Hamiltons, however, showed why they are considered one of the province’s elite clubs. Robert Uys scored their second try in the 26th minute, converted by Isaacs, before JP Lewis added another five-pointer six minutes later.

Isaacs again made no mistake with the conversion to stretch the visitors’ advantage.

Helderberg refused to back down. Liam Tattersall crossed for an important try in the 37th minute, with Visser adding the extras. Hamiltons responded almost immediately through a Darian Hock penalty in the 39th minute.

The hosts had the final say of the opening half when Pieter Kemp crashed over for Helderberg’s third try.

Visser’s conversion reduced the deficit, leaving Hamiltons narrowly ahead 24-22 at the break. Helderberg emerged from the halftime interval with renewed intensity and quickly turned the contest in their favour.

Just six minutes into the second half, Jodeci Davids dotted down for a crucial try, converted by Visser. The home crowd erupted again in the 52nd minute when fullback Junior Fortuin finished off a superb attacking movement to score Helderberg’s fifth try. Visser maintained his flawless kicking record by adding the conversion.

Visser then showcased his all-round brilliance in the 59th minute with a superb drop goal from inside the 22-metre area, extending Helderberg’s lead and putting Hamiltons under increasing pressure. The visitors fought back through tries from Danny Bowoto in the 64th minute and Mark Fairhurst three minutes later, keeping the contest alive heading into the closing stages.

With the pressure mounting, Helderberg demonstrated excellent game management. A penalty opportunity in the 73rd minute saw Visser calmly split the uprights, and with only two minutes remaining, he repeated the feat to put the result beyond doubt.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations as Helderberg secured a famous 45-34 victory over one of the strongest clubs in Western Province rugby.

Michael Visser was instrumental in the win, contributing 20 points through conversions, penalties, and a crucial drop goal, while Helderberg’s forwards and backs combined brilliantly to score six tries against a formidable Hamiltons outfit.

The victory serves as a massive boost for Helderberg’s campaign and once again demonstrated the quality, belief, and fighting spirit within the Charles Morkel outfit.
