Carel van Niekerk, a learner at Piketberg High School, has put the region on the national science map with the recognition of his innovative technology project at the 46th Eskom Expo International Science Fair.
Representing the West Coast Region, received the Siemens (Pty) Ltd Award, he earned a laptop for his achievement.
Carel’s success was shared by another young scientist, Jesmine Linnert of Jurie Hayes Primary School, who received the Siemens Energy Rural School Science Club Award. Her prize included a tablet for herself as well as a laptop for her school.
The prestigious expo brings young scientists from across the country together, giving them an opportunity to present projects that demonstrate creativity, innovation and problem-solving.

For Carel the Siemens award is a significant achievement for a West Coast learner competing on a national platform.
His technology project impressed judges and earned him recognition among the country’s promising young innovators.
Linnert’s award also highlights the potential of learners from rural and smaller school communities.
The Siemens Energy award specifically recognises the contribution of science clubs in rural schools and aims to encourage continued interest in science and technology.
Several other Western Cape learners were also among the special-award recipients. These included Juma Mahango of Parow High School, who received a provisional Eskom Merit Bursary, as well as learners recognised for projects in waste recycling, environmental innovation, engineering, STEM and sustainable development.
The achievements of Van Niekerk and Linnert demonstrate that young scientists from the province, including those from the West Coast, can compete and excel on one of South Africa’s biggest platforms for school science.
