LANGEBAAN – A chilly and rainy morning did little to dampen the enthusiasm of a group of Langebaan Primary School learners who took their entrepreneurial skills to the public on Saturday 29 August.

The learners, who attend the school’s weekly Home Economics class, prepared and sold freshly braaied boerewors rolls at the Langebaan Sports Grounds, gaining valuable hands-on experience in running a small business.

The initiative forms part of a community-driven programme supported by VLV Langebaan and the Langebaan Community Police Forum, which aims to equip young learners with practical skills and introduce them to the principles of entrepreneurship.

The August event allowed the learners to put lessons learnt in the classroom into practice. From preparing food and working as a team to serving customers and handling sales, the children experienced the responsibilities involved in running a small enterprise.

The programme was previously reported on by Weslander when the Home Economics class was launched and the learners’ first Market Day in May. During this Market Day, learners sold baked goods, sweet treats and handmade products. They also learned about preparation, pricing, presentation and selling.

The latest boerewors roll initiative shows how these lessons are continuing to develop beyond the classroom. The broader goal is to give children skills and confidence to create opportunities for themselves in the future, while encouraging them to remain invested in their community.

Miranda Mathews, representing the Community Police Forum, and Sonya Seabrook Uys of VLV Langebaan expressed their appreciation to the generous sponsors whose support makes the programme possible.

They also thanked the learners, whose enthusiasm, smiles and gratitude continue to make the project worthwhile.

Despite the cold and rain, the young entrepreneurs once again showed that with an opportunity, guidance and community support, they are capable of turning practical skills into the building blocks of a brighter future.
