New season sets sail with cruise

Perfect weather conditions met sailors at the opening of the sailing season at Port Owen Yacht Club.

The Port Owen Yacht Club officially opened its new sailing season on Saturday 26 September, with its traditional opening cruise and sail past at Rooibaai.

Organisers had been watching the weather anxiously after several days of unusual West Coast thunderstorms threatened to disrupt the celebrations.

Their concerns were soon put to rest when the clouds cleared and bright sunshine welcomed sailors and guests, allowing the much-anticipated sail past to go ahead as planned.

The official proceedings began with the raising of the flags and the customary blessing of the fleet. Following an enthusiastic skippers’ briefing, sailors made their way to their boats for the parade.

Commodore Jeff Hampton took the salute as a picturesque fleet of sailing yachts and powerboats passed by at Rooibaai, marking the start of another sailing season for the club.

Celebrations continued at the clubhouse that evening, where the venue was transformed into the colourful Flags, Fynbos and Flowers theme.

Club president Jean-Claude Latter welcomed members and guests and thanked everyone who contributed to making the occasion a memorable one.

Commodore Hampton also expressed his appreciation to the organisers, sponsors, cooks, club members and sailors whose efforts contributed to the success of the day.

The evening continued in a festive atmosphere, with music, dancing and lively conversation keeping guests entertained well into the night.

Commodore Hampton closed the evening with a traditional sailor’s wish for fair winds and following seas as the fleet embarks on another sailing season.
