Kwakwatsi Library has had its electricity restored after three months without power due to an unpaid account, ending a period that left learners and community members without access to essential study and online facilities.

The prolonged outage deprived users of computers, Wi-Fi and other resources at a critical time for matric pupils preparing for their final examinations.

The loss of these services meant learners had fewer opportunities to access online study material and use the library as a place to study.

Carina Serfontein welcomed the restoration of electricity following intervention by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

On Wednesday 30 September, DA representative Werner Pretorius was asked to write to the Free State Department of Public Works and Ngwathe Local Municipality, calling for urgent action to settle the outstanding account and restore the power supply.

Learners and community members can now use the library’s facilities again, providing access to study resources and internet services while the matric examinations are under way.

The three-month interruption has raised questions about how an essential public facility could be left without electricity due to an unpaid government account.
