Two men to appear in court after alleged assault in Bethlehem


Two men are expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Monday 20 July, after being arrested in connection with an alleged assault that left a man with serious injuries.

According to Free State police, the incident took place at approximately 22:03 on Friday 17 July at the corner of Baartman and Muller Streets in Bethlehem.

Police responded to reports of a fight and found the victim with facial bruising and a broken left leg. He was treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further medical care.

Police allege that the victim was assaulted by two men, who also sprayed an unidentified substance into his face, causing irritation to his eyes. The suspects allegedly fled the scene in a white Toyota Hilux bakkie.

The motive for the attack has not been established and remains the subject of a police investigation.

A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened. The suspects, aged 23 and 27, were arrested and are expected to appear in court today.

Free State police have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the assault are continuing.
