CAPE TOWN – Steenberg police have arrested five suspects – two women and three men – after a 25-year-old e-hailing driver was kidnapped, raped and held for a R4 000 ransom in the southern suburbs of Cape Town on Saturday 12 September.
According to provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, the victim’s brother raised the alarm after the suspects contacted him demanding the ransom in exchange for his release.
“Police were informed by the victim’s brother, who was contacted by the suspects, demanding R4 000 cash in order to release him,” Gwala said. “They located the victim through his vehicle tracker and found him at Southampton Road in Heathfield.”
Police said the driver first met one of the women through his e-hailing business the previous week. The two exchanged numbers and communicated over several days before arranging to meet on Saturday.
“When he went to meet her, he was kidnapped by the suspects and the females raped him,” Gwala said.
The two women, aged 23 and 34, allegedly raped him while he was held against his will. The three men are aged 16, 42 and 48.
The five are expected to appear before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 14 September on charges of kidnapping and rape.
