Suspected kidnappers of a businessman hauled before court

JOHANNESBURG – Four suspected kidnapping syndicate members arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a Cleveland businessman for ransom are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today – Wednesday. The suspects, aged 42, 50, 51 and 52, are facing charges of kidnapping and robbery.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, spokesperson for Gauteng police, said the victim was rescued unharmed after being held captive over four days following a brazen kidnapping on Saturday. She said a multidisciplinary Gauteng police-led operation arrested the four men on Tuesday, seizing two vehicles and four cellphones believed to have been used in the kidnapping.

The law enforcement agencies comprised the Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, PES Flexi, Cleveland Detectives, HNT Gauteng, Fidelity Specialised Services, and Vision Tactical BSG.

Nevhuhulwi said the victim was allegedly kidnapped at his business premises in Cleveland by unknown suspects last Saturday. The suspects reportedly made digital transactions from the victim’s bank account while in captivity.

“Several transactions involving an undisclosed amount of cash were reportedly made from the victim’s bank account. The suspects also demanded a ransom for his release. A drop-off was arranged in exchange for the release of the victim, which led to the police pouncing on the suspects,” she said.
“There is also a possible link to other crimes as police investigations continue,” said Nevhuhulwi.
