York High School, George, proudly celebrates another milestone for its 1st Boys Hockey Team at the 2026 Cape Town International Hockey Tournament.
Fresh off their silver medal at the Belgotex Hockey Tournament in April, the York High Boys added bronze to their 2026 collection after an unforgettable week of hockey in Cape Town.
Pool Stage Dominance
Competing in the Elite Section, York topped Pool A with a commanding run:
- HTS Drostdy – 3-2 WIN
- Paarl Boys High – 2-0 WIN
- Reddam House Constantia – 2-0 WIN
- Parel Vallei Invitational – 4-0 WIN
- Somerset College – 2-2 DRAW
Semi-Final Battle
Against Paarl Gimnasium, York showed immense resilience. Despite trailing 3-0 within 10 minutes, they fought back to 3-2 before narrowly missing out on the final.
Bronze Medal Triumph
The showdown with Somerset College was tense. After conceding first, York equalized through Stefan Schoeman. With the match locked at 1-1, an 8-second shootout decided the medal.
- Stefan Schoeman, Dominic Joshua, and Layton Dafel stepped up with composure.
- Grade 10 goalkeeper Sange Mayekiso delivered heroics, saving Somerset’s first two attempts.
- Layton Dafel calmly converted the decisive strike, sealing bronze for York.
A Proud Achievement
This medal reflects the team’s grit, resilience, and never-say-die attitude. Competing against South Africa’s top schools and walking away with another medal is a remarkable achievement.
