Jeppe High School for Boys proudly celebrates the remarkable achievements of Joseph van der Merwe. Joseph’s journey this year has been nothing short of inspirational.
Despite the challenges of balancing demanding school commitments, battling injuries and illness, and navigating the overlap of the running and swimming seasons, Joseph displayed the resilience and determination of a true champion.
Earlier in the year, he claimed victory at the Gauteng Biathlon Championships. He set a qualifying time for both the South African Championships and the World Championships. His training thereafter was disrupted, yet his spirit never wavered. On 27 June, Joseph competed in a provincial gala where, despite limited preparation, he produced some of his best performances in the breaststroke and butterfly. In the 50m breaststroke, he secured 2nd place in the over‑17 category against a formidable field.
From there, Joseph went straight into the SA Biathle Championships in Pietermaritzburg. This was following exam season and a whirlwind of illness and restricted training. Against all odds, he delivered an exceptional performance, finishing 3rd in the nation. His dedication was further recognized when he received his Protea Blazer at the awards evening — a symbol of excellence and national pride.
“Congratulations, Joseph — your perseverance, courage, and achievements inspire us all. Jeppe High School stands proud behind you!“
