Maritzburg College welcomes Affies to Goldstone’s on Saturday for a King Price Derby Series showdown that promises fireworks. Both teams arrive with identical records of nine wins and four defeats, setting the stage for a classic encounter.

They’ve faced three common opponents: both hammered Jeppe (Affies 78-10, College 35-12), both fell narrowly to Michaelhouse (Affies 27-29, College 17-24), while Affies outclassed Outeniqua 55-26 compared to College’s 29-30 defeat.

Player pedigree adds spice. College produced SA Schools stars Theo Boshoff and Olwethu Kosani, while Affies delivered SA Schools A talents Charl Els and Martin van Niekerk. Kosani is absent, but Boshoff and Els will lock horns at hooker in a pivotal duel.

Affies had six Craven Week selections and four more in the Blue Bulls Academy Week squad, while College had three Craven Week picks, including sharp-kicking scrumhalf Dom du Toit, a proven match-winner.

Form favours Affies, who ride a five-match winning streak with victories over Outeniqua, Paarl Boys’, Jeppe, Grey College, and KES. College, however, stitched together five consecutive wins before a narrow Michaelhouse loss, tightening their defence to concede under 17 points per game. Affies, meanwhile, average nearly 47 points in their last six outings.

With firepower against resilience, Saturday’s clash is poised to deliver drama at Goldstone’s.
