Clifton School, Durban, gents, Tye Milne, Dan Holliday, Ryde Brissett, and Georg Wolhuter played starring roles as KZN Coastal ended Western Province’s five‑year reign as South African champions at the SASHOC National Hockey Week.
Dan set the tone by opening the scoring in the very first minute of the final. Despite this, Coastals trailed 1‑4 and looked beaten with only four minutes left. What followed was pure drama. Three late goals pulled them level, with Tye calmly slotting a penalty stroke in the final minute to make it 4‑4.
The shootout was all Clifton. Tye and Ryde converted, before Tye sealed the victory with another penalty stroke. Georg stood tall in goal, stonewalling Western Province, who managed just one strike while Coastal netted three — all by Clifton boys!
Adding to the celebrations, Ryde Brissett was named Player of the Tournament and selected for the SA Schools side.
Clifton School replied: “We could not be prouder of these Clifton College 1st XI players, whose courage, skill, and composure brought national glory to KZN Coastal.”
