The Bridge at Greenacres joined forces with Rise Against Hunger South Africa for 67 minutes in honour of Nelson Mandela Day.
The task at hand was to pack food parcels that would be distributed to the city’s needy. The food parcels will be handed out on Mandela Day, July 18, by Community Chest to pre-selected beneficiaries.
On Tuesday, July 4, two sessions were run to pack the required number of food parcels. The first was from 10:00 to 11:07 and the second from 12:00 to 13:07.
The food parcels consisted of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetables, and a mixture of 21 vitamins and minerals packaged into reasonable servings that can feed up to 6 adults and 10 children, per pack.
The Bridge invited members of the community to give their 67 minutes by participating in the event and assist in packing the required number of food parcels – 10 000 meals in total was the target set for the day. The target was reached easily and in good spirit, and fun was had by all.
The prescribed maximum number of volunteers for this event was 60 – with The Bridge community, contractors and tenant staff coming together to make it happen.
The Bridge at Greenacres would like to thank all involved in making a difference in the community.
