GQEBERHA – A breakthrough in the investigation into the attempted murder of a 35-year-old woman in Missionvale, Algoa Park, has resulted in two suspects being linked to the shooting.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, on 27 April at approximately 20:00, the victim left her home and was walking to a nearby shop.
“While walking in the street, she noticed two males standing nearby. As she passed them, they allegedly called her by name,” she said.
Janse van Rensburg added that when the victim turned around, one of the suspects allegedly shot her twice in the chest.
“The victim fell to the ground and called for help,” she said. “It is further alleged that one of the suspects approached her and shot her in the head before both suspects fled the scene.”
She was rushed to hospital for medical treatment and survived the attack.
“At the time of the incident, the motive for the shooting was unknown and the suspects had not been identified,” Janse van Rensburg said.
She added that during the investigation, a detective attached to the Nelson Mandela Bay District Intervention Task Team identified Ahlumile Stofile (21) and Lufunolwethu Nyodi (20) as suspects allegedly involved in the attempted murder.
“The two suspects had already been arrested in July in connection with the murder of ward councillor Sicelo Mleve, who was shot and killed in June 2026,” she said. “Further investigation established that the same suspects were allegedly also involved in the April 2026 attempted murder of the 35-year-old woman in Missionvale.”
Janse van Rensburg added that on 9 September, the two suspects were arrested at the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court, where they were appearing in connection with the murder of the councillor.
They subsequently appeared before the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court on the attempted murder charges as well.
She added that the matter was remanded to today, 16 September for a formal bail application, as the investigation into the attempted murder remains ongoing.
The duo elected to abandon their bail and the matter was postponed to 10 November for further investigation.
