GQEBERHA – A 20-year-old suspect has been arrested in Algoa Park in connection with a murder, marking a breakthrough for the Nelson Mandela Bay District Detective Intervention Task Team in its investigation.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the NMB Detective Intervention Task Team arrested the suspect on Monday, 17 August, in Algoa Park.
“The suspect is facing a charge of murder and is expected to appear before the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court today, 19 August,” she said.
Janse van Rensburg added that the arrest follows a murder that occurred on Friday, 7 August, at approximately 15:00 in Ysterhout Street, Algoa Park.
“The deceased, Ruwayne Rossouw (24), was reportedly sitting on the pavement when an unknown suspect approached from the direction of Missionvale and fired several shots at him,” she said. “During the shooting, another person reportedly fired shots at the suspect, who fled towards Missionvale.”
Janse van Rensburg also stated that the 24-year-old deceased was transported to Livingstone Hospital in an unknown vehicle.
“He succumbed to his injuries at approximately 16:03,” she said. “According to medical personnel, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.”
Janse van Rensburg added that the circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the ongoing police investigation.
The acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, commended the Detective Intervention Task Team for their swift investigative work that led to the arrest of the suspect.
“The SAPS urges communities to continue assisting detectives with information that can help bring perpetrators of violent crime to justice,” she concluded.
