Universal Rugby Football Club (RFC) kept their Super League B title ambitions alive with a thrilling 36-33 victory over Kuruman Rugby Club in a pulsating quarter-final played on Saturday at the Diskobolos Stadium in Kimberley.
The Kimberley outfit came flying out of the blocks, producing some of their best rugby of the season. Universal dominated the opening half with powerful forward play, sharp attacking movements and clinical finishing to build what looked like a comfortable lead.
However, the visitors refused to surrender. Kuruman mounted a determined comeback after the break, capitalising on a lapse in concentration from the home side during the final stages of the match. Universal’s defence was tested repeatedly as Kuruman closed the gap, setting up a nail-biting finish that had supporters on the edge of their seats.
Despite the late pressure, Universal held their nerve to secure a hard-fought victory and progress to the Super League B semi-finals.
Historic season continues with semi-final berth
The victory continues an impressive season for Universal who have consistently been among the competition’s top performers. This win also adds another memorable chapter to the club’s historic 140th anniversary celebrations.
- Universal will now turn their attention to a crucial semi-final clash against Kakamas Dorp on 11 July. The venue and kick-off time are to be confirmed.
Community support praised ahead of final push
Speaking after the match, the club thanked its loyal supporters for creating a fantastic atmosphere.
“The support from the Kimberley community was incredible once again. Our players showed tremendous character to withstand the late pressure, and we now look forward to another huge challenge against Kakamas Dorp. We invite all our supporters to continue standing behind the team as we chase a place in the final.”
With confidence high and a place in the final just one victory away, Universal will be hoping to continue their remarkable season and move one step closer to Super League B glory.
