The old harbour in Gordon’s Bay was transformed into a race circuit on Saturday 18 April, as nine teams took to the water for the 2026 edition of the Anything That Floats challenge.

Anything that Floats organiser Paul Nieuwenhuis briefs participants at the start of the race.

Hosted at the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club, the event combined engineering ingenuity with high-spirited community fundraising for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

While the goal was to navigate the harbour course, the day proved that some designs were rather flimsy.

Participants raced around the harbour in a bid for first prize.

The challenging conditions led to two dramatic casualties: “Holy Ship, it’s Chello” (captained by Paul Bellingan) and the aptly named “Temu Crew” (captained by Christian Cleland) both saw their vessels disintegrate mid-race, with “did not finish” (DNF) recordings.

NSRI’s Charlie Crew (from left) are Nicci Lorenzen, Johandre Swanepoel, Jaco Binneman, Alex Botha and Jacques Dippenaar.

Other teams fared better, including the wetsuit-clad “Charlie’s Cowboys”, who brought a touch of the Wild West to the water, and the brightly coloured “Rub-Her-Duck” squad.

“Knot Safe” proved one of the crowd favourites.

Hilarious moments aside, a few teams stood out for craftsmanship and speed:

โ€ข Overall winner (floating trophy): Alpha Crew Sharks (captain: Jonita Theron);

โ€ข Most original design: Knot Safe (captain: James Kennedy);

โ€ข Overall best design: Aquaventer (captain: Paul Nieuwenhuis); and

โ€ข Best dressed and most spirit: Rub-Her-Duck (captain: Phoebe van Reenen).

The heart of the event remained the support for sea rescue. While NSRI representatives are still verifying the final tally with head office, the fundraiser received a massive boost from a mystery donor who just gave R10 000 on the spot.

โ€˜Holy Ship, itโ€™s Chelloโ€™ had their own cheerleading crew for support.

Organisers Paul Nieuwenhuis and James Kennedy expressed gratitude to the community and all sponsors, including Woodoc, KWV, Bossa Strand and Gorilla Glue, who made the day possible.

“This event continues to grow, showcasing incredible teamwork and spirit,” the organisers stated. “It’s about having fun and supporting the heroes who keep our waters safe.”
