The Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club will host its annual Anything That Floats fundraising race this Saturday (18 April), with all proceeds benefiting the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Station 9 in Gordon’s Bay.
The unique event sees teams race makeshift floats around the Old Harbour course, competing for prizes while raising funds for the local NSRI station that provides emergency marine rescue services to the community.
“This is the NSRI station we call on more often than we’d like when someone is in trouble,” event organisers explained, highlighting the vital role the beneficiary plays in local maritime safety.
Participants can either build their own float or support existing teams through donations. The team raising the highest amount wins the main prize, while all participating teams enter a lucky draw for additional prizes.
Teams must make a minimum R350 donation to the NSRI, though higher contributions are encouraged. Team leaders must provide proof of total donations to the race committee by race day.
Float construction follows specific safety guidelines: teams require at least two members, with one over 18 years. All participants must be capable swimmers wearing approved life jackets. Interested teams can register by emailing gbyc@gbyc.co.za with team leader details, contact details and team member names. Organisers encourage teams to share construction photos.
