Breede Valley Municipality has announced a planned interruption to water supply and sewer services in Rawsonville on Tuesday, 20 October.

The 12-hour interruption will run from 08:00 to 20:00 to allow for the temporary relocation and diversion of existing water and sewer infrastructure at the Rawsonville Smalblaar Bridge.

The Standard Breederivier Gazette previously reported that the bridge was badly damaged during the floods of 11 and 12 May, forcing the closure of Van Riebeeck Street through Rawsonville. The closure has caused an economic blow to businesses.

A temporary pedestrian walkway across the Smalblaar River has been opened, while a temporary two-lane low-level water crossing is expected to be operational by the middle of October.

In a statement on the municipality’s Facebook page, it said the work is necessary to enable the appointed contractor to safely carry out rehabilitation and repair works on the bridge.

All residents and businesses in Rawsonville will be affected by the interruption and are advised to make adequate provision for their water requirements in advance, particularly for drinking, food preparation and essential domestic needs.

The municipality said it will endeavour to complete the work as efficiently as possible and restore normal services within the indicated timeframe, subject to unforeseen circumstances.

The municipality has apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked the community for its patience and cooperation during the essential infrastructure works.
