WORCESTER – A police constable (26) and his father, a firefighter for Breede Valley Municipality, were granted bail of R10 000 each on 14 September in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court. Both men from Worcester were arrested on 11 September on a charge of possession of drugs.

According to Constable Ndakhe Gwala, a provincial police spokesperson, the two suspects were intercepted by Paarl police while on their way to Worcester. The arrest followed intelligence about suspected drug activity.

Gwala said police searched the vehicle and a narcotics detection dog detected drugs in a sealed packet of chips. Inside were 30 grams of crystal meth and 15 grams of cocaine. Both suspects were arrested for possession of drugs.

Regarding the police constable, Captain FC van Wyk, a provincial police spokesperson, said it is police policy to conduct a departmental investigation following any misconduct or criminal investigation

against a member of the South African Police Service.

However, this is an internal process between the employer and the employee and dealt with as such, he stated.

With reference to the firefighter, John Bulani, a Breede Valley Municipality spokesperson, said the matter is currently under investigation by the police and therefore the municipality is unable to comment further on the specifics at this stage.

“All necessary internal human resources processes will be followed in accordance with the applicable policies and procedures,” Bulani said.
