Repairs to Voortrekker Street in Robertson continues after a sinkhole unexpectedly formed in this main road through town.
The sinkhole appeared on 17 July and the Langeberg Municipality said that it measured 3,7m by 4,2m by 2,4m with a volume of 37,3 cubic metres.

In an update the municipality said that the collapse of the old concrete sewer pipeline led to the formation of the sinkhole. “The gases within the pipeline had deteriorated the top of the concrete pipe, leading to its failure. The collapsed section of the pipe and the associated manhole will be replaced, and the road will be restored afterwards. This work is estimated to take approximately two weeks, depending on weather conditions,” it said.
Further investigations will be done on the rest of the pipeline to determine if relining is possible to prevent future issues.
