The Breede Valley Municipality (BVM) has reaffirmed the important role older persons play in families and communities, calling for their rights, wellbeing and protection to remain a priority.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Public Works and Integrated Services, Cllr. Esme Botha, led a BVM delegation at an older persons gathering hosted by the Department of Social Development (DSD) at the National Institute of the Deaf (NID) on 1 October.

October is recognised internationally and nationally as a month to honour older persons, highlight their contributions and address the challenges of ageing populations.

The event brought together older persons, government stakeholders and service providers. Senior DSD officials, including the department’s chief director, attended.

Various stakeholders showcased services, programmes and support initiatives aimed at assisting older persons. The municipality displayed information material and engaged with attendees about available municipal services.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of Executive Mayor Ald. Antoinette Steyn, Botha highlighted the invaluable contribution older persons make to society and the importance of treating them with dignity.

She stressed the need for continued collaboration between government departments, municipalities and other stakeholders to ensure older persons have access to support and services.

The event celebrated older persons and raised awareness about their rights and the responsibility of communities and institutions to protect and support them.

The municipality’s participation forms part of its ongoing engagement with communities and stakeholders to connect residents to relevant services and programmes.
