The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said it has made significant progress over the past four years in improving access to quality education, while acknowledging that challenges remain.

One of its biggest achievements is the #BackOnTrack programme, now regarded as South Africa’s largest learning recovery initiative, aimed at addressing learning losses and improving learner performance.

The department has also invested in literacy and numeracy by introducing comprehensive Foundation Phase reading and maths programmes for learners and teachers.

Infrastructure has been another priority, with the Rapid School Build programme accelerating the construction of new schools and classrooms to meet growing demand. Support for learners with special education needs has also expanded, including services for children with autism spectrum disorder and those with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

According to Western Cape Education Minister David Maynier, the Edu Invest initiative, launched with Wesgro, has attracted private-sector investment and encouraged the establishment of independent schools.

Maynier credited the department’s officials, school management teams, principals and teachers for driving these achievements through their dedication and professionalism.

The WCED said it remained committed to building on this progress and ensuring quality education for every learner in every classroom and every school in the province.
