Western Cape expands rural safety amid challenges

The Western Cape has expanded its own safety interventions amid concerns about farm attacks.

Western Cape Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais said police stations face ageing vehicles, personnel shortages and large geographical areas. Police resources are prioritised for the country’s highest-crime precincts. “Farm attacks remain a huge concern due to its far-reaching consequences,” Marais said, adding that the impact extends to farming communities and food security. Specialised police units are deployed to areas experiencing increased criminal activity, where organised crime or gangs may be involved. However, Marais said police stations remained constrained by limited resources.

The department also works with agricultural organisations and government to improve coordination.
