VREDENBURG – Three artisans from West Coast College have brought home top honours after securing podium positions at the 2nd South African National Artisan Awards held at the Radisson Blu Hotel OR Tambo over the past weekend.

Romario Arendse, Emoshene Moore and Xolisa Solo were among the nominees recognised for their skills and dedication in their respective artisan fields.

Arendse claimed first place in Welding, while Moore secured second place in Pipe Fitting and Solo took third place in Boilermaking.

The achievements highlight the skills developed through technical and vocational education and training (TVET), while showcasing the contribution artisans make to industry and the broader economy.

Arendse, who is currently a senior welder at Tronox, said the award was a meaningful recognition of the commitment he has shown throughout his career.

“This award is deeply meaningful to me, as it recognises the hard work, dedication, and commitment I have demonstrated throughout my career,” he said.

““It also reminds me of where I came from and how far I have come. Knowing my roots and recognising where I am today keeps me grounded, grateful, and motivated to continue progressing while helping others believe in what they can achieve.”

West Coast College principal Lungisa Mbulawa congratulated all three artisans, saying their achievements were a source of pride for the institution.

“West Coast College is very proud and honoured to have produced these three award-winning artisans who not only represent the College with distinction at their workplace but also represent the College in their various fields,” said Mbulawa.

He said their success further cemented the College’s role in producing skilled artisans who contribute to communities and the country’s economy.

The achievements of Arendse, Moore and Solo demonstrate the important role of TVET institutions in preparing young people for the workplace and creating opportunities for professional growth.
