With more than 1 500 entries at the Langebaan Athletics Half Marathon, on Saturday 22 August organisers say the day was a huge success.
Athletes partcipated in the 5 km, 10 km and 21 km races with runners travelling from across the Western Cape and as far as Durban.
According to Leroy Jacobs, race director, the event exceeded organisers’ expectations and continued to grow each year. “We were thrilled to draw a massive field of participants, not only from across the Western Cape but also from as far as Durban.”
He added that the success of the event was the result of the combined efforts of everyone involved, from sponsors to marshals.
“As management we are extremely satisfied with every aspect of the event.
“From our generous sponsors to the dedicated marshals, everyone truly brought their part, creating an electric atmosphere and a seamless race day.”
For Jacobs what really stood out this year was the overwhelming positivity from every participant. “Runners repeatedly praised the route and the beauty of Langebaan, with the town’s wildflowers in full bloom providing a spectacular backdrop. With the sun blazing and the wildflowers in full bloom our town put on a spectacular show. It made me proud to see our home shine, and even prouder that everyone felt that magic.”
The challenging route also lived up to its reputation, with the infamous Black Mamba climb once again proving a talking point among participants. “‘That Black Mamba!’ – those were the first words out of nearly everyone’s mouth. They hate it, they love it but, honestly, what’s a Langebaan race on this side of town without that legendary climb?”
He said runners regarded the entire course as challenging but fair, with its hills adding to the character of the race. “Tough, but fair, scenic, but brutal, that’s our signature, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.”
