West Coast-based chess administrator Andre Lewaks has been re-elected as president of Chess South Africa, securing a second term at the federation’s elective meeting held op Saturday 21 February.

Lewaks, who currently resides in Vredenburg, continues to play an influential role in the governance and development of chess both nationally and op the African continent. His re-election reflects continued confidence in his leadership and commitment to strengthening chess structures across South Africa.

Earlier this year Lewaks was also recognised for his contribution to sport development in the region when he was named District Volunteer of the Year by the West Coast Sports Council at the 2025 West Coast Sports Awards, which were held earlier this year.

Despite his national responsibilities Lewaks remains actively involved in grassroots chess development.

He currently serves as a coach at the Genesis Chess Club in Vredenburg, where he works with young players and contributes to the growth of chess at community level.

Lewaks has several years of experience in chess administration. He previously served as president of the Western Cape Chess Association and began his administrative journey as deputy president of the West Coast Chess Union, where he played a role in strengthening local chess structures and expanding participation in the sport.

His re-election as president of Chess South Africa highlights the continued role of West Coast leaders in contributing to the development and governance of sport at national level.
