As part of its back-to-school plans the West Coast Chess Union held a rapid tournament on Saturday 1 February – five gruelling rounds of a battle, using superior intellect, to be the best of the best.
Various club members qualified for their Springbok colours in Kopanong from 21 to 29 March. Andrea Lewaks, Legene Malletta, Shaundre Lewaks, Mea van Zyl and Anne Belle Ellman will be aiming to get their colours in chess.
The winners of the back to school tournament were:
Boys section – Keanu Bezuidenhout, Jordan Fillis and Archard Franzman.
Girls winners – Isabel Kilroe-Smith, Caitlin Matthews and Samischca Jordaan.
Winners in the open section – Basson Jacque, Klaaste Chadley and Njokweni Llyabona.
The winners in the u-8 section was Jeandre Goosen, Andrea Lewaks and Andries Ellman.
Winners in the u-10 Ruan Goosen, Bea Ruiters and Joshua Naidoo.
