South African motorists are set to feel the pain at the pumps. Central Energy Fund data shows petrol could jump by up to R2.83 per litre on 7 October, pushing 95 octane to around R29.75 per litre inland. Diesel faces an even steeper climb, with 50ppm expected to rise by R3.01 per litre to about R33.06. The surge follows US President Donald Trump’s rejection of an Iranian truce offer, which sent Brent crude surging over 3% to climb back above $107 a barrel. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources will announce the official increases on 5 October.

In other news, South African embassies around the world need repairs worth R830 million, according to figures released in parliament. The UK High Commission needs the most work, with renovations expected to cost around R170 million, while the embassy in the Netherlands requires work worth R110 million. DA spokesperson Ryan Smith said the figures show years of neglect, adding that South Africa’s embassies are now a shell of their former selves.

On the sporting front, the Pick n Pay Gold Cup kicked off with drama. Naka Bulle edged past SK Walmers 43-36 in Pretoria, while Vereeniging crushed Bethlehem Old Boys 105-3. Brakpan knocked over the fancied Grizzlies 26-15 in the biggest surprise of the round. The round of 16 takes place next weekend.
