The Moqhaka Local Municipality in Kroonstad has invested in new machinery and equipment to strengthen its operational capacity, reduce reliance on costly external rentals, and improve service delivery to communities.

The municipality’s executive mayor, Cllr Ramasimong Phohlo Tau, officially launched the newly acquired municipal fleet recently. The investment forms part of the municipality’s efforts to become more self-sufficient by reducing dependence on privately hired machinery and fleet rentals.

The new fleet comprises one excavator, two tractor-loader-backhoes (TLBs), two graders, five Bomag walk-behind rollers and one roller compactor. The equipment will be deployed to accelerate essential municipal services, including road maintenance, pothole repairs, street cleaning and efforts to address water and sanitation challenges.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Tau described the acquisition as a significant milestone in the municipality’s drive towards greater financial responsibility and operational independence.

“This is about restoring dignity to our people by ensuring that potholes are fixed, streets are cleaned, and water and sanitation challenges are addressed timeously using our own resources,” he said.

Tau added that the investment was expected to reduce fleet rental costs significantly.

The municipality said the new equipment would strengthen its ability to carry out essential maintenance and respond more efficiently to service delivery needs across its communities.
