The Kroonstad Regional Court has convicted a 40-year-old man from Edenville for assault and crimen injuria against his 12-year-old daughter.
The court heard that on 29 November last year, at approximately 09:30, the victim encountered her father while on her way to a local shop.
The accused allegedly directed verbal insults at the child and assaulted her with open hands. The child was able to flee the scene and immediately reported the incident to the police.
The Edenville police responded promptly, tracing and apprehending the suspect shortly thereafter. The Tumahole Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit, was assigned to investigate the case.
On Tuesday 24 March the accused appeared before the Kroonstad Regional Court and was sentenced to a R12 000 fine or 12 months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.
