Vrolike Vinkies Educare in Sarepta celebrated their Grandparents Day on Wednesday 9 September, held this year in conjunction with Book Week.

On arrival the grandparents had the chance to place their hand prints on a large tree poster, with their grandchildren’s names written alongside each print.

Reverend Clive Rademeyer entertained young and old with his tricks and a message, using his puppet Dawie. The Cape Community Rhythms Band provided some soulful music and Shireen Brand read a story.

Snacks were served to the grandparents. A group of boys performed a short act, with principal Veronica van de Linde reading the text and the children acting it out. The morning ended with some dancing.

Guests were encouraged to bring a children’s reading book as their entry contribution, to help build a richer reading environment for the young learners.

Stories connect

“Grandparents Day is much more than a celebration. It is an opportunity for our young learners to honour the special people who play such an important role in their lives,” said Van de Linde. “We wanted to create a morning filled with love, laughter, memories and meaningful interaction between our children and their grandparents.”

She said the event aimed to encourage a love of reading while highlighting the value of intergenerational relationships and the role grandparents play in children’s lives.

“We believe that stories connect generations. Grandparents have stories, experiences and wisdom to share, while our children bring their own wonderful energy, curiosity and imagination,” said Van de Linde. “Bringing these generations together creates an opportunity for children to learn that family, storytelling, reading and community all form an important part of who they are.”
