Okavango bridge tragedy as man jumps despite frantic response

A panicked voice note sent to a community group just before 20:00 set off a desperate race against time last night. But for a man standing atop the edge of the Okavango bridge in Brackenfell, help arrived moments too late.

The voice note, sent by a member of the public who had spotted the man in distress on the bridge, reached Titanium Securitas at 19:55. “Can anyone help us please. There is a man standing on top of the Okavango bridge it looks like he wants to commit suicide,” a woman’s voice said.

“Within moments, responders were on their way. But when they arrived, the man was no longer on the bridge. He was found lying on the N1 highway below, where witnesses said he had been struck by two moving vehicles,” Titanium spokesperson Kobus Kotze told TygerBurger this morning.
“He was sadly declared deceased on scene. Nothing could be done for him.” Onlookers were left shaken as his body was covered.
