“We continue to hope that his body will be found,” says an emotional Sulaiman Isaacs from Delft. His 18-year-old son is believed to have drowned at Bakoven Beach near Camps Bay on Saturday 27 September.

Nafees and a group of friends had gone to the beach in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to Captain Liaan Janse van Rensburg, commander of Camps Bay Police Station, the teen stood on the rocks and apparently slipped and fell into the water.

Janse van Rensburg said a missing person’s inquiry had been opened.

Craig Lambinon, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson, said: “Shoreline patrols and investigations along rocks and in the area around Bakoven revealed no signs of the teenager, where it became increasingly clear he probably slipped off rocks into the water and into the incoming tide.”

He said despite extensive air, sea and shoreline-search efforts there was still no sign of him.

Lambinon added that police divers were continuing their search.

With each passing day, Isaacs hopes his son’s body will be recovered soon, so they can find closure.

“It’s been a few days now and there’s still no sign of him. I get emotional just talking about it. It is hard for us. This is my son.”

Janse van Rensburg cautioned beach goers to prioritise safety at the beach ahead of the festive season.

“If people go to the beach they need to be cautious. The rocks are slippery even if they think they are stable. We also remind people that no alcohol is allowed on beaches.”
