BLOEMFONTEIN. The Bloemfontein man found murdered in a rental car in Freedom Square on Sunday, 28 September, has been identified as Sarel May (51), a Centlec employee. The power distributor for the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) confirmed the deceased was still in its employment and held the position of manager of health and safety.
Malefane Sekoboto, chief executive officer (CEO) of Centlec, has expressed shock regarding May’s killing. The deceased reportedly resided in the Bloemspruit area of Grassland.
The Bloemfontein police are searching for three suspects connected to May’s killing. Lt Col Thabo Covane, spokesperson for the Free State police in Bloemfontein, said the ongoing investigation revealed important details. The vehicle, in which May’s body was found, was a courtesy car. It belongs to a rental car company in Kempton Park, Gauteng. He said it emerged the victim’s car was reportedly still in for repair.
Covane said according to witness statements, May was shot at about 04:00 while sitting in a white Toyota Vitz and was in the company of three suspects. He said at the crime scene, experts collected two spent cartridges. Covane said the victim had gunshot wounds in the back of his head.
He said witnesses stated the suspects were wearing the following clothing. One was wearing black clothing with a balaclava. Another wore a grey or white jacket. The third suspect wore a brown jacket.
Covane said according to information received, the three suspects walked towards George Lubbe Street after committing the heinous crime. The police are seeking assistance from the public.
