South African who voted illegally in last US election faces charges

A South African permanent resident in Minnesota in the United States of America faces federal charges for allegedly casting an illegal vote in the US Presidential Election on 5 November 2024, one of 16 foreign nationals charged with election crimes across the country.

The 69-year-old faces one count of making a false claim of citizenship in order to vote and one count of voting as a foreign national. The election in question was the November 2024 contest in which Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris to return to the White House.

The US Department of Justice alleged Weihmann voted illegally in Minnesota and falsely claimed US citizenship to do so.

She is one of ten foreign nationals indicted in Minnesota on voter fraud charges, all lawful permanent residents. The group includes three Liberians aged 48, 61 and 43, as well as a 59-year-old Lithuanian, a 63-year-old Ghanaian, a 78-year-old German, a 58-year-old Bosnian, a 62-year-old Brazilian and a 47-year-old Canadian.

A further six people were charged in other federal districts: three in Louisiana, two in Florida and one in Wisconsin, bringing the total to 16.

The Department of Justice noted that the charges are allegations only, and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
