Postbank has begun the final push to replace old SASSA Gold Cards, warning social grant recipients they have until 31 August to switch to the new Postbank Black Cards or their old cards will stop working.
Grant recipients who miss the deadline will not be able to access their payments from 1 September, when Gold Cards will be deactivated.
The replacement drive starts on 29 April and wraps up a card migration process Postbank started in September 2024.
Thamsanqa Cele, Postbank chief commercial officer, said the bank was stepping up efforts to reach cardholders who had not yet switched.
“We are intensifying the final stages of the SASSA Gold Cards replacement process. This is a direct call to action for customers who have not yet migrated – please act as soon as possible,” Cele said on Thursday.
He said the deadline will not be extended and warned that late swaps could mean missed grant payments.
What the new cards offer
The Postbank Black Card comes with three free withdrawals per month, one free card replacement each year, and a free monthly statement.
Postbank said the new cards protect against unauthorised deductions and the misuse of personal information.
Anyone who has already collected their Black Card does not need to do anything else. The cards are still valid and the benefits remain in place.
How to collect a new card
New Black Cards are available at no cost from Postbank service points inside selected shops, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and SPAR.
Recipients only need a valid South African identity document or temporary identity document. There are no forms to fill in, and cards can be collected at any service point in any province, no matter where the grant was originally approved.
Money on Gold Cards will move across to the new Black Cards automatically, and the cards work straight away.

Scam warning
Postbank warned recipients to watch out for scams.
Any card without “Postbank” printed on the front, or that needs forms filled in before it works, is not a real Postbank Black Card.
