Union High School’s U13A hockey girls once again proved their reputation for punching above their weight, delivering a weekend of grit, skill, and triumph at the 2026 Nika Coertzen Hockey Festival in Bloemfontein.
Competing against strong opposition from across South Africa, the team emerged victorious in the Plate Final, proudly bringing the title back to Graaff-Reinet. Their journey included seven wins, one draw, and just a single narrow defeat, a testament to their resilience and teamwork.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the calibre of the schools they faced. Four of their opponents boast senior first‑team programmes ranked among the top 20 in the country, underscoring the quality of hockey Union’s girls competed against—and overcame.
The tournament began with a hard‑fought 0‑1 loss to Brescia House School. But the girls bounced back immediately with a 1‑0 win over Durban Girls’ Primary. This was thanks to a decisive strike from Taylor Jacobs. From there, Union found their rhythm. They earned victories over Truida Kestell Primary, Laerskool Fichardtspark, St Mary’s Waverley, Kenmare Primary, and DSG Makhanda. It was followed by goals from Taylor Jacobs, Lisa McEwan, and Zoey Buys, leading the charge.
The weekend culminated in a thrilling 1‑0 Plate Final win against St Mary’s, Kloof. It was sealed by another crucial goal from Zoey Buys.
Individual brilliance shone throughout, with Emma Burger (three matches), Hannah van der Walt (two matches), Tiyanah Abader, Layla Ott, Carlie George, and Cayley Brunette all earning Player of the Match honours. Their performances reflected the spirit and determination of the entire squad.
