From Grade 1 to Grade 3, learners of Wilgehof Primary in Bloemfontein, stepped beyond the classroom to discover the power of their own voices. With courage and creativity, they shared their thoughts, dreams, and ideas before an audience of proud parents, educators, and peers.

• Grade 1: “What I want to be when I grow up” – learners shared aspirations for the future.
• Grade 2: “If I were president for one day” – imaginative visions for change in their communities and country.
• Grade 3: “How small acts of kindness can change the world” – reflections on compassion and positive action.

More Than a Competition

The event’s purpose extended beyond awards. It created a platform where children could learn to express themselves, communicate with confidence and understand that their ideas matter.

Educators described the transformation from nervous rehearsals to confident presentations as deeply rewarding. Parents and the school community added encouragement, ensuring every child felt supported and celebrated.

Building Confident Communicators

By introducing public speaking at an early age, Wilgehof Primary aims to nurture learners who are articulate, confident and willing to share their ideas meaningfully with the world.

While recognition formed part of the programme, the greatest achievement was seeing learners realise that their voices carry value — and that people are willing to listen.

Looking Ahead

The event marks the beginning of a new tradition in the Foundation Phase programme. Wilgehof Primary looks forward to giving its young speakers more opportunities to let their voices be heard.

Ultimately, “Little Voices, Big Ideas” proved that even the smallest voice can make a big impact.
