Inter-schools Hockey 2022. Fresh from their triumph at the Fairtree Super12 Hockey Tournament, the unstoppable Meisieskool Oranje 19A Hockey team from Bloemfontein fought their way to a 5-0 win against 2nd placed Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof in Stellenbosch this weekend. They proved once again why they are the powerhouse team of South African girls’ schools’ hockey.

Led by 18-year-old captain Ané Janse van Vuuren, the Oranje team showed their trademark skill and determination during host school Bloemhof’s 24th Inter-schools Hockey 2022 under the watchful eye of new coach Gyster van Schalwyk. Gyster is clearly continuing the culture of excellence established by former coach Morné Odendaal. Thousands of supporters braved the wet and wintery Cape Town weather to fill the stadiums, cheering the players on despite the biting cold.

“The Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof Inter-schools derby has a proud tradition of promoting healthy competition and great sportsmanship. In this regard, the Oranje players did not disappoint. They displaying the indomitable fighting spirit that has earned them a reputation as the Lionesses of schools’ hockey in South Africa,” says Kobus Nel, Group CEO of Fairtree. “We are proud to support the impressive teams from Meisieskool Oranje and Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof. They pulled out all the stops on the field. Thereby they were also shining a spotlight on women’s sports in the country,” he concluded.
