Two Curro Delft learners have etched their names into South African rugby history. Two girls were selected for the country’s inaugural SA Schools Under‑18 Girls rugby team.
Congratulations to Inga Jim and Lethokuhle Madwayi, whose names were announced at the conclusion of the FNB U18 Girls Week in Gqeberha. Inga’s achievement was further elevated as she was appointed captain of the inaugural side. This role cements her leadership in this groundbreaking moment.
Inga was also selected as a loose/utility forward, and Lethokuhle, chosen at prop. They join 26‑player squads that will face each other at Grey High School. Western Province leads representation with 15 players, including both Curro Delft stars. SA Rugby hailed the announcement as a defining milestone, noting that while boys’ teams have been selected for decades, the introduction of girls’ squads marks a new era for the sport.
A Journey of Dedication
For Inga, the announcement was certainly a wave of emotion. From her first steps onto the rugby field at 13, inspired by her brother, she has represented Western Province for three consecutive years and played for the Western Cape’s U15 sevens and fifteens sides. Now, as captain of a team writing history, she reflects: “Success takes discipline, not just motivation. Don’t let anything stop you—because if not you, then who?”
Lethokuhle’s path was more unexpected. After moving from hockey and tennis, she joined rugby on a whim and quickly found her passion. Her selection brought tears of joy and disbelief, but also a renewed determination. “It’s a dream I’m honoured to live. Belief must be matched by hard work and learning along the way,” she says.
A Proud School Moment
Curro Delft Executive Head Ruan Beukes praised the achievement: “Having Inga and Lethokuhle selected for the first‑ever SA Schools Girls team is an incredibly proud moment for our school. They have worked hard, stayed committed, and now also stand as pioneers in South African schools’ rugby. Their success shows every young girl at Curro Delft what is possible.”
