Stellenberg escaped with a 26-21 King Price Derby Series victory on Saturday, but the scoreline barely captures the drama of a contest where the Kwaggas pushed the Jade Brigade to breaking point and came agonisingly close to claiming a scalp nobody thought possible.
This was supposed to be a procession. Instead, it became a masterclass in resilience from an Outeniqua side that refused to surrender despite early setbacks, repeatedly threatened from anywhere on the park.
Stellenberg burst out of the blocks
The visitors came out firing, threatening the Outeniqua line from the opening whistle with the kind of intensity that suggested a long afternoon awaited the visitors. Juvan Burden crashed over from a beautiful short line in the fifth minute to give the Jade Brigade the lead, his power carrying epitomising Stellenberg’s early dominance.
Four minutes later, Ethan van Biljon crossed as Stellenberg maintained relentless pressure. At 12-0, the procession appeared inevitable, Outeniqua outmuscled by opponents operating on a different level entirely.
Kwaggas refuse to buckle
But Outeniqua possessed the will to halt Stellenberg’s charge. They launched a maul that was stopped but recycled quickly to score wide, narrowing the gap to 12-7 and announcing they hadn’t travelled to merely make up numbers.
Daniel Steffen sniped around a ruck in the 16th minute to extend Stellenberg’s advantage to 19-7, but the Kwaggas refused intimidation. They attacked from anywhere on the park, making line breaks that had the Jade Brigade scrambling desperately, though the hosts’ defensive resolve held firm under sustained bombardment.
Momentum shifts before halftime
In the latter stages of the first half, Outeniqua found genuine momentum by keeping the ball alive and generating quick ball on attack. Stellenberg’s emphatic defence forced errors as the Kwaggas threatened, but the visitors’ persistence eventually paid dividends when Matthew Prince barrelled over just before halftime to make it 19-14.
The Kwaggas’ willingness to run from anywhere made for exhilarating watching, though finishing in the final third let them down repeatedly. But they refused to surrender even whilst making mistakes, their self-belief never wavering despite the deficit.
Second-half drama intensifies
Outeniqua kept coming after the break, grabbing the lead through second-rower Franco Pienaar who bashed over after the Kwaggas showed patience in the 22. When they built phases methodically, they proved desperately difficult to stop. At 21-19, Outeniqua led and sensed blood.
Stellenberg responded in the 50th minute from a strong maul, Daniel Mongie running a superb short line to reclaim the lead at 26-21. That score set up a breathless finale.
Desperate defence defines final ten
The last ten minutes delivered a defensive masterclass from Outeniqua. They needed to prevent Stellenberg running away with proceedings, their desperation repeatedly halting the Jade Brigade’s onslaught through sheer bloody-minded commitment.
The final five minutes saw Stellenberg defending desperately themselves. They held out and regained possession to attack, but mistakes in the 22 handed it back to Outeniqua. The Kwaggas, never afraid to counter from deep, almost scored a 90-metre try that would have stolen victory, but Stellenberg’s cross-defence proved exceptional when it mattered most.
The visitors saw out the final moments to claim victory, but only just.
Quality shines through, barely
Outeniqua’s scrum periodically dominated their Cape Town counterparts, a statistic that will concern Stellenberg coaches reviewing footage. Ultimately the visitors’ quality shone through, but only barely, and only after being pushed to absolute limits.
The Kwaggas were exceptional, coming within minutes of claiming a scalp nobody predicted would be remotely achievable. They can hold their heads high knowing they pushed supposed superiors to breaking point and nearly broke them entirely.
